Here are some cool Mobile Apps to use in NYC:
A cool app that tells you where to find Free WiFi in New York with Passwords in public spaces hotspots! All the Starbucks and Mc Donald’s have Free WiFi. Some stores like Gap, Century 21 have Free WiFi too and with this app you’ll find all the Free WiFi spots!
Listing of all Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway shows: days and times, location, tickets.
I use a lot this app to check all the shows that are now on Broadway, new openings, closing dates and schedules. You can view them through alphabetical order, type, opening, closing.
Buy last-minute Broadway tickets at the best prices. This app allows you to:
- Get very cheap tickets (as cheap as $25/$37)
- Create alerts when a show you like has last-minute tickets available
- Enter the mobile lottery to win tickets! You can create alerts when they have lottery tickets available of the shows you are interested. No purchase required to enter the lottery. Really cool!
You can check all the bands and artists that will be performing in NYC the days you come! You can search by the artists you like, by date range and even book your tickets!
An awesome app to make Free Restaurant Reservations easily! You can search restaurants by the name or location, choose the date, time and amount of people.
You don’t wanna get disappointed if you really want to go to a specific restaurant and there’s no availability when you go. Use this app and problem solved! Especially if you’re going to have dinner around 8pm.
You can search restaurants, bars, coffee & tea, spas that are close to where you are located. You can also set up a specific neighborhood (e.g. Restaurants in Soho) and look for reviews.
Order food delivery from the restaurants that are close to your location. Depending on the address you put, you’ll see a list of restaurants that are open at the time you want to place an order.
A famous pizza place because is very cheap and you can see on the app in what step of the delivery process are they (e.g. in the oven, on the way). You can build your own pizza! (I recommend you to add triple cheese).
Check the “coupons” section on the app because they usually have great deals and you can get a medium pizza for only $6!
Very similar to Seamless: order food delivery from local restaurants.
OFFLINE NY MAP + SUBWAY
You can download the map to check it offline from your phone whenever you want. You can use it to know how to get by subway from one location to another. I use Google Maps all the time to check how to go by subway to certain places and how long is the trip.
Steps to download your New York Map:
- Download the app of Google Maps on your phone
- Open Google Maps App
- Type on the search bar: New York, NY
- Touch at the left of the search bar to see the menu. If you are not signed in, touch on sign in to be able to download maps
- Go to Offline Areas and touch the “plus” button to add an offline map
- Confirm that the area you want to download is New York
NEED A TAXI?
These apps are good if you want to request a taxi from your phone (different from the yellow cabs on the streets). You set up location, destination. No need to be on the streets looking or waiting for a taxi. You don’t have to pay the driver since you pay directly from the app (including the tip!).
Uber, Lyft and Gett are all good. Usually the drivers work with all of them so it’s kind of the same! Click here to get a discount using a Promo Code and if you want to know the different car options you can request.
This app is for those who want to explore the city by bike. It’s good in the summer (when it’s not cold). It tells you all the locations where you can pick up and drop off your Citi Bike, the bikes available at each station and empty spots to drop your bike.
BOOKING FLIGHTS & HOTELS
On these apps you can find great deals booking flights within the U.S. (and internationally)
FREE UNIT CONVERTER
This app is good if you are, for example buying furniture, clothes, driving a car so you need to convert the U.S. metric system to the metric system you use. The most useful categories you’ll find on this app are:
Area: to convert square foot to square centimeter and other options available (useful when measuring apartments/houses)
Length: to convert inches, centimeters, kilometers, miles, etc. (useful when measuring furniture, or if you have to drive and want to know the distances).
Mass Weight: g, kg, oz, lb
Temperature: Celsius, Farenheit
Hope this info was helpful to make you a better New Yorker!
